Wonders and Beauty
"We ought to be able to spot something...an event, a person, a memory, an act, a turning of the soul, the flash of bright
wings, the surprise of sweet compassion...somewhere we ought to pick out a glory to celebrate" - Samuel H. Miller
About my photography:
The human eye is limited.
It sees the subject and the negative space, but it always
leads the mind back to the subject.
The eye does not have the means to see the in-between world at the edge
that the imagination prefers to see.
The linear mind prefers predictability whereas the imagination prefers
possibility. The imagination
is always drawn to the edge, to the unknown, because it understands that this
is where the visible world and the invisible world merge. The imagination is the profound
attention that resides between worlds.
It dwells in the mysterious beauty of that in-between world where the
intellect would never dare to take us.
This place is infused with spirit and presence because here the
imagination sees all the possibilities that the linear mind cannot see. Imagination
is vital to our souls. The richness of that which we
experience and the depth of who we are as individuals depends upon the expanse
of what we can imagine. When our
imagination is awakened, our entire experience deepens.
I have always enjoyed manipulating the emulsion of film,
thus altering the perception of reality. My new body of work explores similar
effects with the use of digital darkroom techniques.
All of my recent photographic works are altered, some more
subtly than others. The resulting image is not only a reflection of reality,
but also a rendering of the imagination. Drawing inspiration from poets and sages, my work evokes the sense of beauty and sacredness found in ordinary moments.
